This B&B is a personalized experience offered by the attentive hosts, which most guests find engaging, though a noisy environment and long, lecture-heavy breakfasts may exact a toll on those seeking a quiet trip.
We enjoyed our two day stay here. John and Cathy are wonderful hosts, and we enjoyed their stories of the history of the place and time. The breakfast was very good. It was quiet, and the location was easy walking distance to everything. Also liked that it had off-street parking because parking can be problematic there.
First, this would have been a five-star review except for one annoying trait. Other reviews here have been very polite and kind, but this trait was still in full effect upon our visit. Although others may consider this a quality, we found it rather rude after a point. At every meal we were exposed to John's extensive knowledge of the area which, at first, was entertaining and enlightening, but after awhile became rather tedious. Every meal became a college lecture, which may be quite welcome to some, but we had plans and an itinerary to fulfill. We are rather polite people normally, but felt as though we were being inconvenienced, to put it politely. If you have plans and an itinerary, this is not the place for you. Otherwise, the amenities, ambience and atmosphere are spot on. Just, please, spare the lectures.
After unexpectedly having to visit the area, I stumbled upon this wonderful B&B that serendipitously had a room vacant. The hosts were somewhat of a marvel and shared wonderful stories, anecdotes, historical facts and much helpful information. We were not in any hurry and sat and enjoyed all of it. If a first time to the area, I would highly recommend as a way to complete your trip with so much good information that just seemed to round out the Colonial Williamsburg experience perfectly. They were wonderful hosts and genuinely kind-hearted and I will definitely return and refer my family and friends. As a huge Jane Austin fan I loved the experience of watching the dancers on Tuesday and May have to join in on my next visit. Thank you Cathy and John for opening your home to us!
As many of the reviews previously stated, this is a cute little bed and breakfast. Also as previously stated, the hosts, especially John, do have an encyclopedic knowledge of the history here in Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown. Some further things to consider as you decide whether to make this place your stay while in Williamsburg: 1. Breakfast takes at least an hour as John will ask you where you are going for the day and then regale you with stories of the location, watching you as you eat. If you’re a history buff with a deep love for stories and a desire to be fully engaged at 8am, this is the place for you. If you like to drink your coffee in silence while you slowly wake up, it may not be. 2. Ask a question, however small, about any part of the house or object in the house and a story is tied to it. Sometimes one story launches into another and it’s hard to get away. 5 min or 30 min, you never know how long and politely extricating yourself can be difficult. It is delightful that every part has meaning, but this style may not be for everyone 3. There are English Country dances Tuesdays and Thursdays which they strongly recommend you joining in. Even should you choose not to go, the bedrooms are right off the ballroom and the dancing goes till 10pm. This may not be for everyone 4. There is a house rabbit that stays primarily in the kitchen with the millers but during breakfast is allowed to roam the main floor freely. Depending on whether you're allergic, this may not be for you. 5. The mattresses are hard and the pillows are quite firm. This is to my liking but may not be to yours 6. There is rooms are somewhat cooled. If you're used to sleeping at 75 degrees, shouldn't be a big deal. If you like to sleep at 65, you'll be quite warm. Overall, if you're looking for a warm, inviting place with hosts that will catch you whenever they see you to chat by sharing their stories and delight in living in Williamsburg, this is the place for you. If you're looking for a quiet uninterrupted holiday, you may want to look elsewhere.
We had such a nice visit here, staying from the 27th-30th of December. The room was clean and comfortable and they allow children, which is hard to find in a bed and breakfast. Breakfast was very tasty. The best part though is Cathy and John, who had such wonderful stories to tell and had such enthusiasm for the area and for history. They made us feel like family. We would love to come back.
